When you purchase clothing, always look for, read, and understand the care label. For best results, you should follow the recommended cleaning procedures. However, after 30 years as a dry cleaner, I have cleaned hundreds of thousands of garments and there are thousands of garments that can not be safely cleaned according to the instructions given. Many garments have specialty beads, buttons, and other trims which will discolor or melt in the dry cleaning.

When you purchase clothing from a large or well known retail store, they will stand behind merchandise sold that is incorrectly labeled. However, when you purchase from a small boutique, this is often not the case. Most often they blame the dry cleaner even when the garment was cleaned according to the care label. They will not usually stand behind their merchandise.
